Analysis of music videos
Name of track: Rather Be (2014)
Name of track: Mama (2017)
Artist: Jonas Blue ft. William Singe
This song was another highly praised pop video. This video included the norms of a pop music video, from sea views to boat scenes. The exotic foreign location was very typical of a pop music video and the shots/editing through the video was nothing new. The song was very popular among pop music radio stations in 2017.
Like other music videos, the video included the artists name and song name over the shot of a sea. The camera panned over the sea as it was displayed and the song began while this was taking place. The narrative doesn't really follow a set story except from a two couples on holiday. This idea of love as the theme is very popular throughout pop music videos. There are plenty of camera shots and angles throughout the video. A shot which was popular in the video was a birds eye view. There were shots above where the actors were eating and lots of shots above a boat on the sea.
This video was aimed at an audience between the ages of 15-30.I think the video is very typical of a pop music video because of the exotic location and the characters in it. The video has a very slim and vague narrative without really a ending but their are not any performance scenes through the video.
Name of track: Maps (2014)
Artist: Maroon 5
This video was very different to typical pop music videos. The video has range of themes from death to alcoholism. The song was very popular in 2017 due to its dark themes but upbeat sound.
The video began with digetic sound of a distressed man running into a hospital and shouting "Where is she". The title of the track and the artist isn't displayed in the video. The video follows a fractured narrative throughout the video and there is no performance scenes in the video. The scene at the beginning is the result of the upcoming events. We are then brought back to the beginning of the video at the end of the track. The whole video is set at night and most scenes are very dark. There was a range of shots throughout the video from first person shots to side shots of a car.
This video was aimed at a more mature audience because of the themes throughout the video. The typical audience for pop music may be turned away from the song due to the dark themes in the music video.
Artist: Clean Bandit ft. Jess Glynne
I chose this track as it defined the word 'pop'. The song used a range of pop music conventions from quick editing techniques to bright colourful lighting. The video followed a small narrative with lip syncing as the most performance in the video. The song was played on multiple pop radio stations and small clips of the music video were displayed all over social media. The amount of audience interaction made me want to view the music video.
From the beginning of the video, the establishing shot was the artists name (One piece of text is in English an the other is in Chinese) with digetic sound of a river running. The next few shots included a range of exotic colourful plants and flowers and the river had a range of different species of fish. This set the scene for a exotic garden. These colours used are bright and vibrant, typical to a pop video. In the actual video, the actor is wearing headphones to simulate the way she is listening to the song and singing to it (Lip-syncing). The video slightly departs from the genre as towards the end she is shown to be in a dark room laying on a bed almost imitating that she was in a hospitalised environment. It turns out that all the whole narrative was a dream.
The video was aimed at an audience which are interested in pop music but the video was slightly more mature so i would say 16-30 year olds. This is a typical age range for a pop video. I wouldn't say the video targets at a specific social group because of the different amounts of elements that may appeal to an audience. The video may be targeted at a group of people that may be interested in travelling, due to the exotic location from where its filmed. I would say that the video highlights the way that what you see on the outside isn't always the same from whats in the inside. They want the audience to think that the video is about a adventurous girl exploring the city when in fact she is locked away from the outside world and that its all a dream. The video having a underlying meaning may be more relevant in other genres but no typical to pop music conventions.
